The South African police seized 200 kilograms of cocaine from Mozambique, in the province of Mpumalanga, transported in a heavy vehicle, said a source from the corporation.
The drugs, valued at 29.3 million rand (106.7 million meticais), were intercepted on Saturday morning, December 3, at the Lebombo post on the South African side of the border in Ressano Garcia, spokesman Selvy Mohlala said in a statement.
“The driver of the truck with Gauteng plates, which crossed the border into South Africa from Mozambique, declared his goods to be wigs,” he explained.
According to the South African police spokesman, the driver of the heavy vehicle managed to escape during inspection by customs officials under “the pretext that he was going to contact the owner of the truck.”
“He supposedly disappeared without a trace before the authorities discovered the 200 kilos of cocaine hidden in the truck,” he said.
Selvy Mohlala said that the police seized the vehicle and the goods for investigation, adding that police searches to locate the driver and the owner of the truck continue, and no arrests have been made so far.
According to the images released by the South African police, to which Lusa had access, the company that owns the truck is based in Germiston, southeast of Johannesburg.
Contacted by Lusa, Selvy Mohlala stressed that this “is the largest quantity of cocaine seized in the last three to six months” on the border between South Africa and Mozambique.
