Soap and Oil Industries at Risk for Lack of Coconut in Southern Mozambique

A total of 17 soap and oil production companies in Inhambane province in southern Mozambique may close down due to the lack of coconut on the market, the main raw material used for production. The announcement was made by an official source.

According to Francisco Feijão, provincial director of Agriculture and Fisheries, the reduction of coconut supply for the industrial sector is due to the increase of its commercialization in raw or fresh form, a market preferred by traders due to its price and ease of sale.

“For the oil and soap production companies, the copra (the dried coconut pulp) is sold for five meticais a unit, while in the streets and local markets, the fresh coconut is sold between 12 and 20 meticais a unit,” referred the responsible cited by the daily Notícias.

According to the authorities, the price practiced in the sale of coconut in local markets encourages the orchard owners, which leads them to reduce the supply to the processing industries.

Given the situation, Francisco Feijão says there has been a reduction in the production of coconut derivatives in recent years in Mozambique – one ton of raw copra oil was produced in 2020, compared to about six thousand tons in 2018.
