President Highlights Portuguese Support for Training Mozambican Professionals

Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, emphasized this Thursday (July 3) in Lisbon the strong relationship between Mozambique and Portugal, underlining Portugal’s ongoing support in the training of Mozambican professionals as a clear expression of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Chapo made the remarks following a more than one-hour meeting with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, during his first official visit to Portugal since being elected in 2024. The Head of State stressed that both parties “assessed the current state of bilateral cooperation”, and found it to be “at an excellent stage,” based, among other factors, on the implementation of projects under the 2022–2026 Strategic Cooperation Program.

“Portugal’s support in training Mozambican professionals, both in the field of defence and general academic education, is a clear sign of commitment to Mozambique’s development,” the President stated.

At the beginning of his address, Chapo offered condolences to the Portuguese people for the recent deaths of footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, victims of a road accident in Spain.

The visit, aimed at strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation, includes a formal invitation for Luís Montenegro to make an official visit to Mozambique, with the date to be set via diplomatic channels. Chapo called it a “fortunate coincidence” that both leaders are at the start of their respective terms, an opportunity that, he said, should be used to deepen bilateral ties.

He also emphasized Portugal’s strong support in combating terrorism in Cabo Delgado, not only through a bilateral defence and security agreement, but also via contributions within the European Union, which funds Rwanda’s military presence in the operational theatre.

The President also praised Portugal’s humanitarian support for displaced populations in Cabo Delgado Province, affected by terrorism and natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, and heavy rains that cyclically hit the country.

The upcoming 6th Mozambique-Portugal Summit, scheduled for December 8–9 in Portugal, was identified by Chapo as an opportunity not only to take stock but also to map out the future of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic and trade sectors.

“Portugal is a strategic partner in Mozambique’s development. We want to further enhance economic and trade relations, and this summit will be essential to consolidate that dimension,” he noted.

During the meeting, the President also informed his Portuguese counterpart about the political, economic, and social situation in Mozambique, which he described as “stabilized” after a period of violent demonstrations. He highlighted the ongoing national inclusive dialogue with opposition parties and competing candidates.

In conclusion, Daniel Chapo welcomed Luís Montenegro’s intention to create credit lines for private sector financing, viewing the measure as a significant gain for entrepreneurs and citizens of both countries.
