The Portuguese Ambassador to Mozambique, Jorge Monteiro, stated this Monday (28th) that the upcoming Portugal-Mozambique summit, scheduled for December 8–9 in Portugal, represents an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote the entry of Mozambican companies into the Portuguese market.
Speaking to the press after presenting his credentials to Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, in Maputo, the diplomat highlighted that, alongside the summit, a business forum will take place to foster economic partnerships.
“Alongside the summit, there will also be a business forum, and these forums are also opportunities to strengthen partnerships. If there are many Portuguese companies in Mozambique, we also want to see more and more Mozambican companies investing in Portugal, being present in the Portuguese market,” he said.
Jorge Monteiro emphasized that the event is being prepared to mark a “significant strengthening” of relations between the two countries in all fields, adding that Portugal maintains a broad cooperation framework with Mozambique. “We will work across all areas to ensure the summit is a success in every respect.” The current political moment, he noted, “offers a favorable context for defining a long-term cooperation framework.”
In the same vein, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro had already stated on July 3 that the holding of the summit “reflects the will of both parties to renew the energy of cooperation.” “We are at the beginning of a political cycle, which started with the election of President Daniel Chapo and the re-election of the current Portuguese Government. We are therefore both in a position to bring new energy to the relationship between our governments, countries, and peoples,” he declared after meeting with Mozambique’s Head of State in Lisbon.
During the previous bilateral summit, held in September 2022 in Maputo, 18 agreements and memorandums were signed in areas such as agriculture, education, justice, health, heritage, culture, promotion of the Portuguese language, and support for the business sector, including job creation projects in Cabo Delgado.
