The Port of Quelimane is able to boost the economy of Zambezia and Tete provinces through the export and import of goods and explore business opportunities with neighboring countries such as Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The idea was mentioned on Monday by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Janfar Abdulai, during the launch of the dredging of the access channel to the port, which is very silted up and therefore hinders the entry of large ships.
On the occasion, the Minister of Transport and Communications said that the investment of just over two million US dollars is being made in recognition of the need to improve operating conditions and the role of infrastructure in boosting the economy of the province, in particular, and the country in general, which strengthens regional integration with SADC countries without direct access to the sea.
According to Janfar Abdulai, contrary to what had been happening, in which the dredging only covered the commercial wharf and the maneuver and access basin, this time a complete work will be done, including the Marrubune channel, in response to the high volume of sediments that hinder navigation.
The Port of Quelimane consists of a quay 234 meters long and six meters deep. During the dredging, sediments will be removed to allow the entry and exit of large ships. In addition to the dredging, the government hopes to modernize the signaling of the access channel, which includes a hydrographic survey to better understand the profile of the channel, including where modern buoys will be placed.
