MPDC Announces Night Mobility Measures on EN4 and Traffic Management for Maputo Port

The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) is working with several institutions to ensure the safe road circulation of trucks on the National Road N4, on account of the possible ban on the circulation of cargo vehicles during peak hours.
“We are working with the carriers, concessionaire of the EN4 (TRAC) and the road safety directorate of the Ministry of Transport and Communications to improve the night traffic situation, with emphasis on the placement of lighting and cat’s eyes on the roads, to allow visibility of the lane limits,” said, Osório Lucas, Executive Director of the MPDC, quoted by Domingo.

The incentive for the night circulation of trucks on the EN4 also has to do with the reduced number of vehicles circulating at night, around 200.

The Maputo Ports management will also build a car park for cargo trucks at the Pessene administrative post, in Moamba District, Maputo province. The space will serve as a waiting point for trucks that will be prohibited from circulating towards the Port of Maputo during peak hours.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, recently announced the interdiction of the circulation of trucks during peak hours in order to allow greater road mobility in the Greater Maputo region.

Magala challenged the MPDC to use the railway line for the transport of certain materials and Osório Lucas said that for that, circulating means such as locomotives and wagons are needed.

“Just to have an idea, in the Port of Maputo there are two million tonnes of unused capacity on the railway line for the reception of rail cargo. In Matola there are 2,500,000 tons available to receive goods via rail,” he said.
