Mozambique has port infrastructures with the capacity to handle various types of cargo, which are classified as the most important and viable in the southern African region. In this regard, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said that the country intends to intensify cooperation with China and modernise the country’s ports in order to increase exports.
The president, who is on a six-day working visit to the People’s Republic of China, praised the Asian country’s model of social and economic development, considering it to be an example for other nations.
‘In the south of the country we have the Port of Maputo, which is used by Zimbabwe, Eswatini and South Africa; in the centre there is the Port of Beira, which serves Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe; and in the north we have the Port of Nacala, which is used by Zambia and Malawi. The infrastructures have significant capacity and help development,’ he said.
Speaking on Sunday, 1 September, during a meeting with the leaders of the Shanghai City Council, Nyusi said: ‘We want to welcome the economic advances not only of Shanghai, but also of the whole of China. President Xi Jinping’s policies give us the strength and freedom to progress.’
The head of state also praised the Chinese government’s willingness to help the country in the fight against terrorism, which has plagued Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique for more than six years.
Filipe Nyusi is in China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, where he will take part in the 9th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) and the China-Mozambique Business Forum.
FOCAC will take place in Beijing from 4 to 6 September with the theme: ‘Joining hands to promote modernisation and build a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future’.
