Caminhos-de-Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) announced on Thursday 12 September that it has started transporting fuel to Malawi via the Dona Ana-Vila Nova da Fronteira branch line.
‘The train left on Tuesday (10) from the Port of Beira, in Sofala province, with 24 platforms, bound for the town of Marka, located in the Malawian district of Nsanje, which borders Vila Nova da Fronteira, on the Mozambican side,’ the organisation said in a statement.
According to the organisation, ‘the first transport of fuel by rail to Malawi, from the Port of Beira, is a clear indication that the Dona Ana-Vila Nova da Fronteira branch line is already being used for commercial purposes’.
The document revealed that the branch line was recently rebuilt by the company, with its own funds, in an investment estimated at 30 million dollars.
The railway was only being used for trains transporting construction materials, which are being used to rebuild the extension of the track on the Malawian side.
‘Fuel imports from the Port of Beira were made by road, an inefficient and costly alternative,’ he emphasised.
