Mozambique Raised $66 M in International Tourism Revenues – First Half of the Year

Mozambique collected tax revenues from international tourism of about US$66 million in the first half of this year. The information was revealed on Tuesday, December 13, in Maputo, by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edelvina Materula, during the gala of the association of travel agencies and tour operators.

According to the minister, in the first semester of 2022, there were registered about 350 thousand international visitors against the more than 200 thousand registered in the same period last year, which represents a growth of 74%.

“This increase impacted on international tourism revenues, which reached a figure of 66 million dollars against 26 million in the same period last year, which represents a growth of 150%,” the minister informed.

As for domestic tourism, which is seen in essence as the main alternative to leverage the sector in the country, citing data from the 2019-2020 Household Budget Survey (IOIF), Edelvina Materula clarified that “in this period, more than 2.1 million visitors, residents of Mozambique, made at least one trip within the country and spent more than three billion meticais in their expenses.”

“In order to improve travelers’ confidence, enhance the business environment, and promote a greater flow of tourists, the Government, in partnership with the private sector, successfully held the VIII Edition of the International Tourism Fair – FIKANI; invested in participation in international fairs and familiarization visits to boost domestic and international tourism; recently launched the Electronic Visa platform that will contribute to the improvement of the country’s competitiveness, flexibility in obtaining visas, increase of visitors and revenues, among other direct benefits,” said Materula.

After the covid-19 pandemic, many countries decided to take a series of measures for the recovery of the tourism sector, which managed to get out of the critical stage it was in during the pandemic period. According to the World Tourism Organization (WTO), an estimated 207 million international arrivals were recorded in June and July 2022, more than double the numbers seen in the same two months last year. These months represent 44% of the total arrivals recorded in the first seven months of 2022.
