It was one of the most represented public companies in the country, and today, it passes into history, due to a government decree that understands that, effectively, the Mozambican Post Office is already gone.
Adriano Maleiane, Minister of Economy and Finance justified the decision, saying that it was about time to free the State from the responsibility of the postal service and to hand it over to the private sector.
The company has accompanied the country’s history. It carried and shared, through letters and parcels, stories and news, sad and happy, of loves and dislikes, from one corner to the other. After undergoing transformations from State Enterprise to Public Enterprise, it stopped in time and succumbed to the pace of technology.
“The company cannot keep up with the changes that have taken place and its social object is outdated” said Raimundo Matule, Administrator of the Institute of State Patrimony Management.
The company is wound up, leaving about 350 workers with tears in the corner of their eye.
“We were all surprised with the decision and we are all sad and without knowing what to do and will be our fate” said Elias Chirindza, Secretary of the Company’s Trade Union Committee.
For a year and a half the process of liquidation of the company will take place. The idea is to evaluate the patrimony and the debts of the company, as for the workers.
VOA knows that at this moment there is at least one business group aligned to acquire the patrimony and continue the work of Correios de Moçambique, in another format and new services, however, the confirmations are referred to other occasions.
