Mozambique and Malawi Introduce Electronic Pass to Facilitate Trade Between Countries

The governments of Mozambique and Malawi introduced an electronic pass for people living on the border between the two countries on Wednesday 27 November. According to information provided by Radio Moçambique, the measure aims to facilitate trade and stimulate development.

‘This is an innovation aimed at improving entrepreneurship, allowing accessibility and mobility for people and goods living on the border between Mozambique and Malawi,’ said a statement.

According to the statement, the electronic pass will benefit residents of the border areas of the provinces of Tete, Zambézia and Niassa. To this end, migration experts from both countries are working on a document that will help identify goods to be exported and imported.

In October, Mozambique and Malawi signed an agreement in Lilogwe to simplify cross-border trade procedures, with the aim of improving the fluidity of trade between the two nations. This agreement represents an important milestone in the economic and diplomatic relations of these two neighbouring countries and strategic partners in the southern African region.

With the implementation of the agreement, the two African countries will be able to export and import up to 47 agricultural and manufactured products, without the imposition of customs duties, for amounts not exceeding one thousand dollars.

‘This is another important step in our trade relations with Malawi, one of our strategic partners for business development,’ said the Mozambican Minister of Industry and Trade, Silvino Moreno, during the ceremony to sign the memorandum.
