TEBA Channels One Million Rand to Pay Ex-Miners

One million rand, out of a total of five million, is available for the resumption of deferred payment of former workers from South African mines, after the 2017 interruption due to lack of funds.

According to Notícias, the information was shared in Maputo by the executive manager of TEBA, a labour recruiter for the South African mining industry, José Carimo, in a meeting with journalists.

He mentioned that the Ministry of Labour and Social Security is working so that former miners and or their dependents, duly identified, can receive the money to which they are entitled.

“The resumption of payment started in December last year and everything is being done so that all the listed workers can receive their salaries. We do not want there to be any gaps, hence we are working very cautiously,” he pointed out, adding that if the ex-miners were not receiving their salaries they could possibly demonstrate.

Currently, the nearly 18,000 workers in the South African mines are receiving their wages in that country and deferred payment in Mozambique.

At stake are about 1,600 former workers who had their salaries deducted from their wages that were diverted to other expenses in the Ministry of Labour, triggering the case of $113 million in trial in the Judicial Court of Maputo city.

Recall that José Carimo is one of the declarants in the case of the fraud of the National Directorate of Migratory Labour (DTM), which occurred between 2010 and 2015. The case has 11 defendants, including former Ministry of Labour officials, especially the former head of the portfolio, Helena Taipo, the former director of the DTM, Anastácia Zitha and the former coordinator of social reintegration projects for former miners and their dependents, Pedro Taimo, accused of committing acts that harmed the State by more than 113 million meticais.
