Syrah Resources, listed on the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange), has announced the appointment of Samantha Hogg to the board of directors as an independent non-executive director and chair-elect. The succession, made public in May, will be completed on 31 December, the date on which the current chair, Jim Askew, will step down, the news portal Mining Weekly reported on Friday, 5 December.

According to the publication, Hogg currently serves on the boards of Cleanaway Waste Management, GrainCorp and IGO, and has previously held positions with organisations such as Adbri, De Grey Mining, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, Hydro Tasmania, Infrastructure Australia and TasRail. She also chaired Marinus Link and Tasmanian Irrigation. Her executive experience includes senior roles at Transurban Group and WMC Resources, in the areas of finance, strategic projects, marketing and corporate services, having served as chief financial officer at Transurban in her most recent executive role.
Upon taking up the position at Syrah, Samantha Hogg stated that the company is at a decisive stage of its development, highlighting her intention to contribute to the execution of the growth strategy, which includes expanding the production chain of natural graphite and active anode material outside China.
Jim Askew, who has chaired Syrah since 2014, said that leading the board during the development of the Balama graphite mine in Mozambique and the Vidalia active anode material production unit in the U.S. state of Louisiana has been “an honour.” He noted that market shifts and geopolitical dynamics over the past decade have created long-term conditions for these company assets.
Askew added that Hogg has the right profile to guide the board into the next stage, stressing that the succession ensures continuity in the company’s operations.
