Syrah Resources: Balama Graphite Mine Reaches Global Milestone With IRMA 50 Certification

The Balama graphite mine, located in Mozambique and operated by Syrah Resources, has reached a significant milestone by receiving IRMA 50 certification, awarded by the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). The certification, obtained after an independent audit carried out by SCS Global Services, recognises compliance with more than 50% of the standards established in the four essential pillars of IRMA: social and environmental responsibility, business integrity and positive legacy planning, according to the BBC portal.

The audit report, released on 19 December, highlighted that the Balama operation met all the essential requirements in areas such as waste and materials management, water and air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and ecosystem services. This result reflects the mine’s commitment to environmental protection and the development of local communities.

Aimee Boulanger, IRMA’s executive director, emphasised the importance of this recognition. ‘This report demonstrates that mines that supply essential materials for the renewable energy transition can point to transparent and independent assessments of their environmental and social performance,’ she said.

Shaun Verner, managing director and CEO of Syrah Resources, celebrated the achievement as a milestone for the global graphite industry. ‘Achieving IRMA 50 certification is a significant milestone for Syrah, demonstrating our commitment to operating in accordance with international best practice in responsible mining. This is the first recognition of its kind in the global graphite industry,’ he emphasised.

Verner also emphasised the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its ESG (environmental, social and governance) performance. He pointed to Balama’s strong safety record, investments in training and developing a highly qualified workforce, community development initiatives, human rights due diligence and commitment to environmental sustainability as examples.

Recognising the Balama mine as a pioneer in sustainable practices reinforces its position in the global graphite industry, especially at a time when the material is playing a key role in the transition to renewable energies. The project has been praised not only for minimising environmental impacts, but also for creating significant employment and promoting local development.

With this certification, the Balama mine reaffirms its role as an example of good practice in mining and demonstrates that it is possible to align industrial operations with respect for the environment and local communities.
