PRM and SERNIC Agents Under Investigation Following Theft of 56 kg of Gold in Mogovolas

The district of Mogovolas, in the province of Nampula, has once again been the scene of an armed robbery with action movie-like circumstances. This time, 56 kilograms of gold in the possession of a foreigner were stolen, in a case that mobilized local authorities.

According to Víctor Vilanculo, spokesperson for the Judicial Court of Nampula Province, eight individuals carried out the robbery, including five police officers and one SERNIC agent. Initially, the court did not want to disclose the professions of those involved, but after insistence, it was confirmed that among the four police officers involved is the district commander of the PRM in Mogovolas.

The foreigner who was robbed was carrying, in addition to the gold, 1 kg of a gemstone known as paraíba. A message circulated in a WhatsApp group that includes journalists and spokespersons from the provincial PRM command in Nampula, revealing that the police spokesperson allegedly provided incorrect information about the case.

The suspects were detained on July 9 and interrogated at the First Police Station in the city of Nampula the following day, but surprisingly, they were released while the investigation continues.

It is worth remembering that in November last year, Mogovolas was also the scene of a major theft: 300 kg of tourmalines were stolen from a local mine during popular protests, one of the largest gem thefts in the world.
