The director of Infrastructure Services in Niassa, Américo Chivale, recently confirmed that a graphite mine in the Muichi region, Nipepe district, will start operating from 2024, as the processing plant is already 80% complete, Diário de Moçambique reported on Tuesday 19 September.
According to the newspaper, the confirmed graphite reserves in that province are estimated at 50 million tonnes and the mine will be operated by the Chinese company DH Mining Development Limited, which intends to invest 30 million dollars in production operations.
The Chinese company expects to produce 400 tonnes of graphite a day which, according to recent studies, is of sufficient quality to be used in the automotive industry and in the production of electrical equipment.
To avoid problems during extraction, the company plans to build a bridge over the Lúrio River to connect the mine to the port of Nacala, in the neighbouring province of Nampula.
It is known that the Muichi factory complex will employ thousands of workers, 800 of whom will be involved in graphite production.
