Ndalamo Resources Highlights Mozambique as a ‘Pillar of Mining Expansion’ in Africa

Mozambique’s mining sector is consolidating itself as a strategic platform for the expansion of mining operations on the African continent. This vision was emphasised by Shammy Luvhengo, CEO of Ndalamo Resources, during a debate on sustainability and collaboration in the mining sector, according to Engineering News.

According to Luvhengo, the Matola Coal Terminal in Mozambique plays a central role in Ndalamo’s operations, serving as an important point for exporting coal to international markets. ‘The terminal is a key part of the continuity of our operations and the strengthening of our presence in the region,’ he said.

As well as reinforcing the importance of regional infrastructures such as the port of Matola, Luvhengo highlighted the need for standardised environmental regulations across the continent, arguing that inconsistent environmental practices between different jurisdictions make it difficult to implement cohesive and sustainable solutions in the African mining sector.

In the context of social responsibility, the CEO emphasised that mining companies should focus on the development of local communities, recognising the unique challenges they face.

‘It is essential that companies not only prioritise commercial profits, but also demonstrate tangible social benefits, especially in sensitive areas where mining operations coexist with pre-existing communities,’ he said.

Luvhengo also highlighted the challenges associated with the introduction of new technologies in the mining sector, such as the need to mitigate the job losses expected with the advance of Artificial Intelligence, and emphasised the importance of investing in the development of local skills, particularly in training operators of technically advanced mining equipment, as a way of ensuring long-term sustainability.

Ndalamo Resources continues to expand its portfolio of coal projects, but according to the executive, the company is also diversifying its investments to include minerals used in batteries, positioning itself to meet the new demands of the global market.

Finally, Luvhengo emphasised the importance of local and regional partnerships in Mozambique and other African countries. ‘Finding the right partner and aligning strategies is essential. In any country where we operate, we will do our utmost to collaborate with local partners who share our values and objectives,’ he concluded.
