The General Inspectorate of Mineral Resources and Energy (IGREME) has announced the temporary suspension of several mining concessions in Manica province, following complaints from local communities about severe environmental impacts.
According to authorities, artisanal mining activities have been polluting rivers, including the Revuè, and the Chicamba reservoir, both crucial sources of drinking water supply.
The contamination, caused by the use of highly toxic substances such as mercury, is affecting public health and leading to the death of aquatic species. Recent reports indicate that fish can no longer be found in the Chicamba reservoir.
Beyond environmental risks, the accumulation of sludge threatens the operation of the Chicamba hydroelectric plant, which could see its turbines compromised if not subjected to deep cleaning.
In August, authorities fined 11 companies in Manica for environmental crimes. Now, the suspension covers all companies with mining concessions in the province, though no duration for the measure has been specified. It is known that among the suspended firms is a company linked to Jacinto Nyusi, son of former President Filipe Nyusi. Provincial authorities stress that companies are being formally notified and emphasize that the decision aims to protect the health of local communities, safeguard ecosystems, and ensure the normal functioning of energy infrastructure.
