Kenmare Resources Promotes Public Consultation for Moma Dam Construction

Kenmare Resources, a mining company located in the Moma district of Nampula province, is preparing to build a tailings retention dam, a transfer channel and the diversion of a road. These works are part of the development of the Nataka heavy sands deposit, one of the company’s mineral extraction operations.

According to the newspaper Noticias, in order to move forward with the project, the company will hold the fourth round of public consultations, focussed on the resettlement of five communities that will be impacted by the works. This process aims to involve the affected communities, guaranteeing their participation in decisions related to the project.

The Nataka heavy sands mine, operated by Kenmare, has an annual production capacity of approximately 1.2 million tonnes of ilmenite, as well as by-products such as rutile and zircon, which are also extracted as part of the operation.

These public consultations are essential to ensure that the project can be implemented with minimal social and environmental impact, while respecting the needs of local communities.

Recently, the company announced that it will strengthen its mining operations at the Moma mine with the acquisition of two new electric dredgers supplied by Royal IHC, a company specialising in the construction of mining equipment. The dredgers, which are currently under construction at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, the Netherlands, are scheduled for delivery at the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025.
