The balance of payments report revealed that the value of mineral coal exports stood at 462.3 million dollars (29.2 billion meticais) in the first quarter of this year, representing an increase of 0.3 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, when the figure stood at 460.9 million dollars (29.1 billion meticais).
The document from the Bank of Mozambique (BoM), published on Wednesday (31) by Lusa, explains that the growth in coal sales is due to the rise in price on the international market.
According to the central bank, in recent times the volume of coal exported to the international market has fallen by 5.6 per cent, due to various external phenomena. Aluminium, the third most exported product, had sales of 202.2 million dollars, down 21 percent year-on-year, while electricity sales grew from 141 million dollars to 158.6 million dollars.
‘In the case of electricity, the increase continues to be influenced by the upward revision of the export price applied to the main customers by the main company exporting this resource in 2023,’ he points out.
Among traditional products, tobacco led the way, with sales rising to 60.2 million dollars, followed by vegetables, which rose 67.7 per cent to 37 million dollars, while banana exports rose 43.5 per cent to 11.8 million dollars.
