Maputo City Transporters Adjust Public Transport Fares

Municipal passenger transport companies in the Maputo Metropolitan Region, southern Mozambique, on Thursday, June 1, raised the price of a trip by three meticals, said a statement issued by the transporters.

A 10-kilometre journey will cost 15 meticals and any longer journey will cost 18 meticals in the municipalities of Maputo and Matola.

The statement justified the rise in fares with the need to “make the companies’ operations viable and ensure their continuity.

The statement noted that the new prices were in line with increases approved in February for private passenger transport companies, which increased the cost of travel by three meticals, an increase that had been delayed by the municipal companies.

“The implementation aims to standardise the fare structure applied by all operators in the Maputo Metropolitan Region,” the statement said.

The passenger transport service in the country’s cities is mainly provided by private operators, but also includes the activity of municipal companies.
