Maputo: Another Businessman Kidnapped. Last Case Less Than a Month Ago

On Saturday (20), another kidnapping shook Maputo City, this time involving a 50-year-old Indian businessman who owns the Luxo e Brinde shop. The incident took place at around 2.30pm in the Belita area, on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, according to the newspaper O País.

As the newspaper quoted police spokesman Leonel Muchina as saying, ‘the crime was perpetrated by four armed individuals. Despite the presence of a police squad less than 100 metres from the scene, their intervention was insufficient to prevent the kidnapping, resulting in an exchange of fire that failed to stop the criminals.’

This incident comes less than a month after a similar case. n Wednesday, 26 June 2024, another businessman of Asian origin was kidnapped in Maputo by a group of six individuals. The Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) confirmed that the businessman also had his business established in the city.

The recent increase in kidnappings and other crimes has led the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, to demand more effective action from the PRM.

In a statement made on Wednesday, 17 July 2024, Filipe Nyusi challenged the authorities to step up their efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators of these crimes. The President believes that the capture of those responsible could transform the current narrative of insecurity in the country, saying that ‘the masterminds are very fearful’ and that coercive measures could force them to back down.

Over the last ten years, Mozambique has faced an escalation in transnational crimes, such as kidnappings, drug trafficking and money laundering. The recent series of incidents underlines the urgent need to strengthen strategies to combat crime and guarantee the safety of citizens and businesspeople in the region.
