M-Pesa Wants to Cover 75% of the Mozambican Population by 2025

The electronic platform for financial transactions, owned by Vodacom, announced that it intends to further expand its coverage to about 75 percent of the adult population of Mozambique by 2025.

The projections come through the voice of the company’s new General Director in Mozambique, Simon Karikari, for whom the continued investment in the expansion of the mobile wallet aims to allow more Mozambicans “to have access to financial services and, consequently, enjoy the advantages they offer,” who also recalls the nine years of the implementation of the platform in the Mozambican market, and extols the “remarkable growth, mirrored by the increase in users.”

Currently, the mobile wallet has approximately 5.3 million active users, of which about 9,300 are MPEME, who conduct approximately 132 million monthly transactions through M-Pesa, according to figures provided to DE by the mobile operator.

“With these numbers, it is clear that M-pesa will continue to be one of our bets, because it is one of the platforms that has contributed the most to the digitalization of money in Mozambique, as well as to financial inclusion,” stressed the newly appointed CEO of the company.

M-Pesa currently has a network of over 40,000 agents spread across the country and intends to establish more partnerships with the public and private sectors, as well as with non-governmental organizations.
