The Director of the Port of Nacala, Neimo Induna, quoted by the newspaper Noticias in the edition of this Thursday, 29 June, said that the first quarter of 2023 was characterised by an increase in the number of ships that called at the port.
Without revealing figures, the head of the Port of Nacala, said that “the increase in the movement of ships has forced the management of the institution to dedicate, exclusively, a dock for containers, allowing the Mozambique Shipping Line to increase the number of port calls. He concluded: “the increase in port calls of container ships is also due to the reduction of global freight, as well as the fact that there is no longer a shortage of containers.
In the three terminals of the port, namely containers, general cargo and liquid bulk, there was overall registration of 646 816 metric tons, compared to 583 107 tons in the same period of 2022, representing a growth of 10.9%.
Regarding complaints from businessmen about the theft of their goods at the port, through tampering with their containers, Neimo Induna made it known that the situation is under control, thanks to the introduction of additional measures. “The security of the Port of Nacala may improve in the coming days, with the finalisation of the fences and gates of the port enclosure, as well as the installation of security cameras,” he revealed.
In another development, the port official revealed that the international environment, particularly the war between Russia and Ukraine is impacting the global market and the city of Nacala, in particular, as the import of wheat, in bulk and fertilisers was affected, although some customers have found alternatives to the problem.
