The companies Portos e Caminhos-de-Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) and Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC) are to launch a platform next month that will serve to ensure the sharing of information and help increase efficiency in the operations of the two institutions.
According to CFM’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Agostinho Langa, the measure will respond to the sector’s challenges, as data will be shared on a full-time basis, making railway management more flexible.
He added that the platform will allow all stakeholders (CFM employees, MPDC, customers and forwarding agents) to visualise the status and location of their cargo, from origin to point of arrival.
“We are the point of exit and entry at sea for the countries of the hinterland and we must fulfil this vocation efficiently. Today, more than ever, the country has rail-port infrastructures that create excellent opportunities, which is why we want to be the region’s logistics base,” he emphasised.
According to Langa, “so that the growth of the Port of Maputo doesn’t make life difficult for the residents of the metropolitan region, CFM has been working to ensure that most of the cargo transported by road is transferred to the railway”.
The Chairman acknowledged that, in recent years, the Mozambican rail-port system has seen enormous demand, especially from neighbouring countries, especially South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia, which use the national territory to enable their trade.
