Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Monday highlighted the development of the Techobanine port, energy cooperation and the strengthening of logistics links between Mozambique and Botswana as the central priorities of the partnership between the two countries.
Speaking during a meeting with Botswana President Duma Boko as part of a three-day state visit, Chapo called for the translation of political agreements into concrete projects capable of delivering tangible economic impact across the region.
Among the projects deemed priorities is the Techobanine deep-water port, located in the Matutuíne district of Maputo province. The infrastructure is a joint venture between Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe, valued at approximately US$6.5 billion and envisaging a railway line of around 1,700 kilometres.
"We have the Techobanine port project, which belongs to Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe, so that we can increase the capacity of the Limpopo corridor," Chapo said, noting that the project could improve cargo flows and strengthen Botswana's access to Mozambican logistics corridors.
"We must continue to work together to see how to materialise this project," the president added, also advocating for enhanced cooperation in transport and logistics. In that context, he pointed to the Matola fuel depots as infrastructure of strategic relevance to the Botswana economy.
"Transport and logistics is an area we must focus on," Chapo said. He also expressed gratitude for Botswana's support across a range of areas, including the participation of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission in counter-terrorism operations in Cabo Delgado, solidarity during floods and cyclones, and backing for national political dialogue.
Cooperation between the two countries also extends to agriculture, livestock and tourism, with Chapo specifically highlighting the exchange of expertise and Botswana's supply of veterinary vaccines to Mozambique. "The exchange of experience we are having in the tourism sector, in agriculture, in animal husbandry — particularly the vaccines we have been receiving from Botswana for animal health in Mozambique," he said.
On mineral resources, Chapo said Mozambique intends to draw on Botswana's experience in the exploitation and management of the sector at a time when the country is updating its legislation. "We want to learn from Botswana, which has vast experience in this sector," he said, adding that the goal is to increase the production, export and industrialisation of Mozambique's mineral resources.
Chapo also highlighted Botswana's experience in public administration reform and digitalisation as a potential reference model for Mozambique. The two countries are expected to deepen cooperation in security, defence, tourism and culture, building on a historical relationship rooted in the Southern African liberation movements.
The state visit, undertaken at the invitation of President Boko, aims to strengthen bilateral ties and includes the signing of agreements under the framework of the joint cooperation commission.
