Japan Assesses Investment Projects in Nampula Province

A delegation from the Embassy of Japan in Mozambique, made up by staff linked to the area of economic diplomacy, has been in Nampula since Monday, December 12, to visit some infrastructures of capital importance for the development of the Northern Corridor.

According to Notícias newspaper, these are structural infrastructures, most of them located in the port city of Nacala, whose implementation is funded by the Government of Japan, under the scope of bilateral cooperation with the national authorities.

Amongst the infrastructures, the highlight goes to the rehabilitation of the Nacala deep water port, in a financial effort estimated at around US$277.5 million.

The conclusion of the work, in March, will make it possible to modernise facilities and equipment, making the port a benchmark in the Southern African region, given its capacity to handle cargo, which could double by 152 percent.

“Another undertaking allocated to the population thanks to Japanese support is the Namialo power transmission substation, Meconta district, inaugurated in 2019, and which so far already directly benefits about 25,000 customers, through the low voltage distribution line,” explains the News.

On their expedition, the diplomats also visited a project to assist communities on Mozambique Island, through which a school benefited from nine classrooms, budgeted at over US$86,000.
