The World Bank (WB) will disburse 250 million dollars to support urban transport mobility in the Maputo Metropolitan Area. The funds are aimed at the construction of the first bus rapid transit system, called BRT, and facilities associated with the project in the cities of Maputo, Matola and Vila de Marracuene.
In addition to the construction of the first bus rapid transit system (BRT) and associated facilities, the amount will also be used to improve access to low-income neighbourhoods by upgrading roads, building non-motorised traffic infrastructure and facilitating the mobility of vulnerable groups.
The World Bank Country Director for Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles, Idah Z. Pswarayi-Riddihough expressed, this Wednesday, in a statement, her satisfaction for the achievement of the milestone, which could improve the lives of the inhabitants of the Greater Maputo region.
“This operation will ultimately contribute to expanding economic opportunity and social inclusion. Poor access to jobs and services is a major constraint to urban economic productivity, hinders the potential and competitiveness of cities and is a critical element of social exclusion underlying urban poverty,” stressed Idah Z. Pswarayi-Riddihough.
