Vale Moçambique this month started the construction of public infrastructure for livestock development in the district of Moatize, in Tete. Estimated at around US$1.2 million, the project will benefit the communities in this district, which develop livestock in the vicinity of Vale’s mining concession zone.
The infrastructure will be built over about 18 months, with management and maintenance then transferred to the Moatize government. Facilities will include water boreholes, a cistern, feeding and drinking fountains, a rural pharmacy for the sale of livestock medicines, ramps for loading and unloading animals and a treatment sleeve for disease control.
Around 120 cattle, goats and swine breeders in the 1º de Maio, Bagamoyo and Nhanchere neighbourhoods in Moatize district will benefit from this program in its first phase. The Catete area chosen by the government covers around 500 hectares, where conditions will be created for cattle breeders in Moatize.
A partnership between Vale and the government also provides for livestock farmers to benefit from technical and professional health assistance.
This is yet another initiative that mining company Vale Moçambique is implementing in Moatize with a view to honouring its commitments to local communities and contributing to the socioeconomic development of residents.
