US ‘Ready’ to Support Reconstruction in Cabo-Delgado

The US on Friday said it was ready to support Mozambique in rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by insurgent groups in districts affected by terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

“The US government is ready and will participate effectively in the response,” said John Grabowski, regional adviser for the Office of Humanitarian Assistance of the United States Agency for Development Assistance (USAID).

Grabowski was speaking in Pemba, moments after delivering 60,000 kits of various materials (including blankets and some construction materials) to support 20,000 families that are victims of terrorism in the northern districts of Cabo Delgado.

While admitting that there is still no specific plan to support Mozambique in the reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure, Grabowski stressed that the United States is “always ready”, adding that strategies for recovery will be made according to the plans of the government of Mozambique.

“We will reflect on how we can invest, not only in continuing support for the displaced but also in the reconstruction and recovery of these areas that were abandoned in order to effectively allow people to return to their homes,” he said.

The province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, has been the scene of attacks by armed groups since 2017, incursions that have led to more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to the Mozambican authorities.

The fight against insurgents in Cabo Delgado gained a new boost when on 8 August the joint forces of Mozambique and Rwanda recaptured the strategic port town of Mocímboa da Praia, which had been in rebel hands for over a year and was considered to be a “base” of these armed groups.
