The Mozambican government needs 30 million dollars to build a new bridge over the Rovúbuè River in Tete province, central Mozambique.
According to information released on Tuesday 9 January by the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM), the sum will be used to respond to studies carried out by engineers in the area, which indicate that the base of the pillars over the river is damaged, making the infrastructure fragile to support the circulation of light and heavy vehicles.
The construction directly connects the city of Tete to productive districts and countries in the hinterland, and was already affected in 2021 by Cyclone Ana, which devastated that region.
According to the National Director of the National Roads Administration (ANE), Elias Paulo, the Executive is waiting for the “green light” from some co-operation partners to start work.
“Once this project is viable, the conditions will be in place to relieve the pressure on the Samora Machel bridge, which has been suffering from the effects of the excess weight of the cargo being transported. We are therefore endeavouring to rehabilitate or build a new bridge,” he said.
