Second Phase of Maputo-Ressano Garcia Railway Line Duplication Project Moves Forward

The Maputo-Ressano Garcia railway is about to enter the second phase of the doubling project, an initiative aimed at transforming freight transport in southern Mozambique and increasing the country’s exports. This advance, led by the company Portos e Caminhos-de-Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), is a direct response to the growing demand for the region’s rail-port system, namely to serve the industrial and mining markets of South Africa and neighbouring countries.

According to O Económico this Monday, January 6, the first phase, completed in September 2024, has already shown significant results, increasing transport capacity to 13 million metric tonnes per year. With the start of the second phase, the forecast is to reach 24 million metric tonnes per year, which represents a significant contribution to regional and international trade.

This project, valued at around 80 million dollars in its first phase, includes not only the doubling of the line, but also the improvement of the passenger railway terminal at Maputo Central Station and the expansion of critical logistics infrastructures, such as the Ressano Garcia shipyard. The aim is to integrate cargo flows to foreign markets more efficiently and ensure that Mozambique consolidates its position as a strategic centre in the South African corridor.

CFM’s commitment is not limited to improving the physical capacity of the railway. The company intends to select specialised consultancy services to manage and supervise the project, ensuring compliance with international standards in terms of safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability. Part of the funding for the second phase will be provided by partners such as the French Development Agency (AFD), reinforcing the international dimension of the project.

In addition to the direct impact on freight transport, the project brings economic and social benefits to the communities along the line. The increase in rail traffic is expected to significantly reduce transport costs and relieve pressure on road infrastructures, helping to reduce accidents and carbon emissions.

Over the last five years, investment in Mozambique’s railway sector has been a strategic priority to meet the growing demand for logistics. The Maputo-Ressano Garcia railway project is yet another example of the country’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and strengthening regional integration.

However, with the completion of this second phase, the Maputo-Ressano Garcia railway could reach record levels of efficiency and productivity, consolidating Mozambique’s role as a key player in regional trade. However, challenges related to resource management, environmental monitoring and logistical coordination continue to require rigorous attention to ensure long-term success.
