The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, clarified on Wednesday 28 August in Malawi that the Port of Nacala, in Nampula, has not been concessioned to the Malawian government, as has been speculated by some citizens.
According to Radio Moçambique, at a meeting that the head of state held on Wednesday with the Mozambican community living in Malawi, as part of his visit to that country, he explained that the government has only granted a space of land outside the operational area of the Port of Nacala for Malawi to base its dry port, which will serve to store general cargo in transit, while awaiting its evacuation.
At the meeting, the Mozambican community in Malawi praised the Mozambican President’s efforts to restore effective peace in Cabo Delgado and thanked him for sending a civil registry team to document Mozambicans living in Malawi.
On the occasion, Filipe Nyusi said that Malawi is not yet one of the first ten strategic countries in international trade co-operation. Likewise, Mozambique is not yet in the group of countries that export the most to Malawi, a fact that the statesman wants to see reversed through the application of trade reforms between the two nations.
The Mozambican President reiterated that Mozambique has the potential to effectively serve the economy of Malawi and other countries in the region, given its geostrategic position.
During his visit, the Mozambican President participated as guest of honour at the 20th Agriculture Fair, where Mozambican provinces Sofala, Tete, Manica and Zambézia were represented.
