The Mozambican President (PR), Filipe Nyusi, announced on Friday (10), during his visit to the district of Mueda, in the province of Cabo Delgado, the progress of the rehabilitation work on the Mueda-Negomano road, which links Mozambican to the Republic of Tanzania. According to Radio Moçambique (RM), the head of state also spoke about the progress of the new Mueda District Hospital, which will be inaugurated in the next two months.
On the occasion, Nyusi highlighted the importance of the regional hospital, which will benefit the populations of Mueda and neighbouring districts such as Nangade, Muidumbe, Palma, Mocímboa da Praia and part of Macomia. ‘With the installed capacity and the modern equipment that is being brought in, many people won’t need to be sent to Pemba to receive hospital care,’ explained the President.
The hospital will be set up in a large space to avoid overloading Pemba hospital, which will be rehabilitated to support the new unit. The PR reiterated that the work is part of a wider effort to improve health services in the region and relieve pressure on other local infrastructures.
During his visit, the head of state also inaugurated the departure lounge at the local aerodrome and the houses for fighters in the national liberation struggle. According to Nyusi, these initiatives are part of the government’s efforts to improve living conditions and infrastructure in the province.
The President emphasised the importance of these works for the sustainable development of the region, which has faced significant challenges in recent years.
Since October 2017, the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed rebellion with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist group Islamic State.
The last major attack took place on 10 and 11 May last year on the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred rebels sacking the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and Rwandan soldiers, who are supporting Mozambique in the fight against the rebels.
