Port of Nacala: Rehabilitation Works Forecasted for March 2023

The completion of the rehabilitation works of the Port of Nacala, in the province of Nampula, initially scheduled for the end of this year, will only be effective in March next year, according to newspaper Notícias.

Started in 2018, the development project aims to adapt the infrastructure to current requirements and fulfill its role as the main gateway for goods, as well as make the port a reference at the level of Southern Africa.

According to the director of the Implementation Unit of the Rehabilitation Project of the Port of Nacala, Edgar Jorge, the failure to meet the deadlines was largely due to the covid-19 pandemic, which ravaged the country and the world. However, the level of execution of the works to date is 90% and the works are proceeding at a satisfactory pace.

“We still have some work to complete, so we think we need another three months for that. Some things are beyond our control and our will,” said the director.

The work – financed by the Government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in an overall investment of about 277.5 million dollars – intends to improve regional logistics and contribute to the economic development of the Northern Corridor.

Edgar Jorge also revealed that the interventions range from dredging, construction of access roads, paving of yards and acquisition of modern equipment.

“It is expected that after this rehabilitation, the port will significantly increase its cargo handling capacity by 152% from the current 100,000 containers to 252,000 20-foot containers per year,” he detailed.

The rehabilitation and modernization of the infrastructure includes the construction of three parks and the creation of conditions for docking large ships.
