The circulation of passenger trains on the Sena line linking Sofala province to the coal town of Moatize in Tete has resumed. This railway line was paralysed for a month as a result of the passage of Tropical Cyclone Freddy which caused cuts in some sections of the line.
With parts of the railway line cut off due to damage caused by heavy rains and winds, which accompanied the passage of tropical cyclone Freddy, Mozambican rail company Empresa de Ferro de Moçambique announced in a statement that the circulation of trains had resumed a month later.
The first phase was opened for passenger trains and then it will be the cargo trains, as confirmed by the governor of Tete province, Domingos Viola.
“Trains are already circulating, they are still in a testing phase, yes, but at least the passenger train, and then the cargo trains will come in and they will be able to use that track. Bearing in mind that a month without circulation there was very heavy losses for the companies operating on that rail line, even the population,” Domingos Viola, governor of Tete province, said.
The Sena Line is the backbone of central Mozambique and of the Zambezi valley in particular. This is the line used to transport coal from Moatize by the mining companies operating in the central province of Tete.
