Nyusi Launches Reconstruction of 30 Million Line Linking Tete and Malawi

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, launched the reconstruction works of the railway line that connects the province of Tete to neighboring Malawi, interrupted decades ago due to the civil war.

“Our expectation is that [the line] will serve as a catalyst in boosting trade,” said Filipe Nyusi, during the ceremony, as part of a working visit to the district of Mutarara, Tete province, in central Mozambique.

The works are estimated at 30 million dollars (25 million euros) and will cover an extension of 44.6 kilometers, opening the circulation for trains from the port of Beira, in the province of Sofala, also in central Mozambique, to Malawi.

For the Mozambican President, besides ensuring the connection with Malawi, the corridor will boost the economy of the central region, opening opportunities in various sectors, especially trade.

“This line does not serve to embellish the district of Mutarara or the province of Tete, but to produce and guarantee the circulation of goods,” the Mozambican head of state told local communities.
