National Engineering Must Adjust to Climate Change – Nyusi

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has challenged Mozambican engineers to focus on the natural characteristics of the country, and adapt their techniques to provide a product capable of resisting natural and environmental disasters caused by climate change.

In a message, on the occasion of National Engineers’ Day, which is celebrated on Wednesday, Nyusi recalled that Mozambique is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change and the victim of continuous natural disasters. Therefore, national engineering is challenged to bring a robust response.

“Being an engineer is to be the projector of hopes and the materializer of dreams, using science, creativity and, above all, humanism to generate structures and infrastructures that ensure the functioning of a society”, said the President.

He added that engineers “must not be intimidated, they must be innovators, questioning the practices settled as paradigmatic, through the search for a new vision of the world, always believing that there is a better way of doing things.”

“That is why our Mozambican engineer is today challenged to improve his technique, not only in terms of aesthetics or quality, but also in terms of safety, resilience and mainly the cost, taking into account that he is in a country still on the route to development, seeking improvements in the solution of housing, sanitation, transport, and urban infrastructure problems”, read Nyusi’s message.

Nyusi also stated that the government will continue to provide the necessary support for the engineering profession, by modernizing the legal framework and by providing proper space so that engineers can carry out their profession without constraints.

More than just a festive date, according to the President, National Engineers’ Day should also be a moment of reflection on the contribution of this professional group in the collective efforts for the development of the country.
