Nampula: World Bank Provides $75,000 for Water Systems

Since last year, the province of Nampula, in northern Mozambique, has seen a shortfall in water supply due to the inoperability of part of the systems that are supposed to supply around six million people.

Data from the government authorities indicates that of the 215 water supply systems in our province, 144 are operational and the remaining 77 are operating irregularly, leaving a large part of the population without a water supply.

In this sense, as a form of relief, the World Bank has allocated a total of 75,000 dollars (4.7 million meticals) to invest in the construction of 11 water supply systems in some districts of the region.

According to the provincial director of Public Works in Nampula, Rui Ramos, 11 districts will be covered, namely Mecubúri, Mogovolas, Moma, Muecate, Mossuril, Eráti, Rapale, Morrupula, Lalaua, Angoche and Malema.

He said that in addition to the supply systems, a considerable number of water wells have already been drilled in some districts and are expected to be completed by the end of this month.

‘The availability of water has been insufficient to meet basic needs and for productive use, due to climatic variations, hydrogeological characteristics and the fact that the country experiences rainfall for a period of three to four months a year. Strategic measures must therefore be adopted,’ he said.
