Rovuma University (UniRovuma), located in the city of Nampula, held a series of lectures on Thursday (17) aimed at engineering students, centred on the theme of the resilience of public infrastructures to the impacts of climate change.
According to the newspaper Noticias, the event aimed to discuss innovative and sustainable solutions that can mitigate the effects of extreme weather events, which in recent years have seriously affected various regions of the country, including Nampula.
Among the main topics discussed were the importance of integrated urban planning with resilience measures, the use of sustainable construction materials and the incorporation of new technologies into infrastructures.
Experts emphasised that the lack of application of these solutions in various urban areas has resulted in serious damage to the population’s quality of life, with Nampula being one of the cities most vulnerable to these effects.
During the talks, case studies were presented that show how adaptation to climate change can be integrated into the urban development process.
Nampula was one of the examples analysed, and was pointed out as a city where the lack of resilient practices in construction and urban planning has amplified the problems arising from heavy rainfall, flooding and other natural phenomena.
The UniRovuma event reinforced the need to train future engineers and construction professionals so that they can apply the best international practices in the Mozambican context, promoting safer, more durable infrastructures adapted to the climatic challenges facing the country.
This initiative is part of a wider effort by the university to sensitise young students to the importance of sustainability in infrastructure development, thus contributing to the creation of more resilient cities that are prepared to face the impacts of climate change in the future, the source said.
