The Mozambican Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lídia Cardoso, revealed that more than US$20 million are needed for the construction of the Angoche fishing port in Nampula province, northern Mozambique.
According to the official, this is a strategic infrastructure that will help in the development of the region, pointing out that the resources are already being mobilized with cooperation partners.
“The project for construction is already in the final stage. However, the winning company of the public tender launched has not yet been determined. The infrastructure will be strategic, since only two ports operate in the country – Maputo and Beira. The one in Quelimane has support deficiencies”, she explained.
For the minister, the existence of a port in Angoche is an asset for the country, as the fish caught in the area can be processed locally.
“It is exhausting for fishermen working in the coastal area of Angoche to maintain their boats in Beira or Maputo, so we believe that with the port, the situation can be resolved,” she concluded.
According to information, the Executive has already invested about 90 million meticais to support artisanal fishermen in Nampula province, under the More Sustainable Fisheries program, financed by the Blue Economy Development Fund.
