The National Roads Administration (ANE) in Nampula, in the north of the country, is facing financial difficulties in carrying out major road works in the region, Radio Moçambique reported on Thursday, 13 February.
According to the news agency, the head of ANE’s Planning Department in the province, Juvêncio Valente, said that at the moment ‘only minimal maintenance work is being carried out to ensure that the roads are passable.’
He pointed out that the province’s roads have not undergone major rehabilitation since 2020 and that, this year, ‘ANE needs 460 million meticals to rehabilitate around 2,600 kilometres of roads, between paved and unpaved sections.’
In July 2024, the government made 500 million meticals available for routine maintenance and interventions on secondary and tertiary roads that connect the districts in Nampula. According to Mateus Espírito Santo, ANE’s provincial delegate at the time, this amount covered around 75 per cent of the estimated 800 million meticals per year for this type of intervention.
As part of road maintenance, in October last year the municipality of Nampula intensified specific actions in strategic areas, with a focus on repairing damage caused by the rains. Amina Eduardo, the municipality’s public works technician, said at the time that the aim of these interventions was to minimise the impact of adverse weather conditions.
