he Nampula-Cuamba railway line was reopened Wednesday after the derailment of a coal train in the north of the country, the management company announced today.
“The railway section was re-established after repair and track cleaning works were carried out,” Nacala Logistics, a subsidiary of mining company Vale, announced in a statement.
The train was connecting Vale’s mines in Moatize to the port of Nacala on Friday when 40 of the 120 open coal wagons fell off a bridge over the Namutimba River, Cuamba town in Niassa province.
Witnesses say that the train was moving faster than normal, that some cars got separated and then crashed into the others, falling into the river, but the causes of the accident have not yet been revealed.
The train was carrying 10,000 tons of coal and also included four locomotives.
