The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has revealed that the lorry traffic management park, located in Pessene, in the Moamba district of Maputo province, along National Road Number 4 (N4), has already received 346,000 lorries since it began operating in November last year.
Quoted by the Carta de Moçambique portal, the organisation explained that the park receives a daily average of 948 lorries, mostly transporting ore, and made a positive assessment of the infrastructure’s performance. The Pessene park was created with the aim of mitigating congestion on the N4, providing temporary parking and properly managing traffic bound for the Port of Maputo.
Valued at three million dollars, the project was launched in April by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, in an initiative carried out by the Maputo Provincial Government, which aims to streamline operations and increase commercial efficiency along the Maputo Corridor.
The first phase of the works lasted approximately 90 days and prioritised essential basic works such as cleaning, levelling, building fences and supplying services (water and energy), while the second phase focused on integrating commercial services and increasing port activities in the truck traffic management park.
‘The impacts of the park are remarkable; there has been a reduction in congestion on the N4 with a considerable increase in the volume of lorries received at the Port of Maputo. We have seen greater port efficiency (lorries enter immediately through gate 1, with no queues on arrival) and also an increase in traffic safety levels,’ described MPDC
