Mozambique Will Have an Alternative Highway to N1

The Government reiterated its efforts to build a highway alternative to the National Road Number One (N1), with the aim of boosting the national economy through road infrastructures that speed up commercial exchanges and the transport of people and goods.

The information was presented on Wednesday, 19 October, in Parliament, by the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, during the session of questions to the Government, when he was asked to provide information about ongoing investments and perspectives in the area of roads.

The alternative road is expected to link the Moamba district, in Maputo province, and the Espungabera region, in Manica, as a way of connecting the country in flood situations when the N1 is particularly affected.

The government is also planning another road to link Zumbo district to the Indian Ocean, whose feasibility study has already been carried out and is currently seeking the resources needed to build it.

According to Mesquita, the road project that will unite the country, via the interior, includes a bridge over the Save river, linking the provinces of Gaza and Manica.

The minister said that this corridor was part of a wider plan by the government to relieve the pressure on the only highway that crosses the country, which was built during the colonial period and is currently in a high state of degradation.

In terms of investments underway, Mesquita told deputies that in the implementation of the Government’s Five Year Programme 2020-2024 1106 kilometres had been rehabilitated and 443 others paved, amongst national roads, as well as ten bridges built and rehabilitated.

Mesquita added that several road infrastructure projects were underway in the country, noting, for example, the Roma-Negomano road, in Cabo Delgado, Naguema-Chocas-Mar and Malema-Cuamba, linking Nampula and Niassa.

Other works mentioned by the minister responsible for the area are in Zambézia and Sofala, namely the enlargement of the Quelimane-Namacurra road and the paving of the Tica-Buzi-Nova Sofala road.

The minister also mentioned the conclusion of paving works on the Marracuene-Macaneta road, as well as the rehabilitation and widening of the N4 section, which goes from the Mozal junction to the Tchumene junction.
