Maputo: N4 $4.6M Asphalt Works to Be Completed by December

The asphalting work on National Road Number Four (N4), between the Tchumene junction and Novare Mall, in Matola, which is almost ten kilometres long and budgeted at 4.6 million dollars (300 million meticals), could be completed by next December.

According to the newspaper Noticias, the information was provided this Tuesday (27) by António Mutemba, the N4 concession coordinator at the National Roads Administration (ANE), during the monitoring of the removal of infrastructure located on the route of the motorway.

The buildings being removed include commercial establishments, educational institutions, car washing points and businesses that had been built in the reserve area.

Mutemba said that the construction of the road is progressing at a satisfactory pace, with some points having been completed and traffic flowing.

‘We have four kilometres done on the Tchumene 2 side, where the road is in use. Now we’re working on Malhampsene and, if there are no adverse situations such as abnormal rainfall, the works will be completed by December,’ he said.

Recently, Trans African Concessions (TRAC) released a report highlighting an increase of around three per cent in freight traffic over the last two decades on the N4.

According to the document, this crucial road linking Mozambique and South Africa has witnessed a steady growth in the daily number of cargo trucks, and the strategic importance of the ports of Maputo and Matola as distribution centres for goods from the neighbouring country is growing.

The report also reveals that 2297 freight lorries currently pass through the Maputo tollbooth every day, a significant increase on the 89 lorries registered in 2002. At the Moamba tollbooth, the number has risen to 2697 lorries a day, compared to 79 two decades ago. ‘This growth is mainly driven by the transport of minerals, which is crucial for regional economic development,’ reads the document.
