Maputo: Construction of Public Toilets to Cost 17M Meticals

Maputo’s municipal council has clarified that the construction of three public toilets in the city will cost more than 17 million meticals, a figure justified by the technical specifications of the infrastructures, including variations in the dimensions of each unit and the incorporation of adapted spaces for people with disabilities, according to the newspaper Noticias.

The new toilets will be built at the Junta, Jardim and Missão Roque bus stops, as part of the Maputo Urban Transformation Project (PTUM), financed by the World Bank. According to Paulo Muiambo, PTUM’s Water and Sanitation technician, the public tender for the work was launched last year and awarded to the company Jakhas Serviços.

Muiambo explained that the construction of the Junta unit will take place outside the bus terminal, in a location considered more suitable, with work scheduled to begin in late February or early March. The execution period is approximately six months.

The Maputo City Council emphasised that the initiative aims to improve hygiene and comfort conditions in high-traffic areas. The project is part of a wider plan to modernise the city, which began in 2024 and has already included the construction of toilets at the Entreposto bus stop and the rehabilitation of the Xipamanine and Malanga markets.

As well as guaranteeing accessibility for people with disabilities, the infrastructure will be adjusted in size to better cater for the high influx of people in these areas. The municipality has ensured that durable and resistant materials will be used to guarantee the longevity of the facilities.

Meanwhile, the municipality promises to provide more details about the project at a press conference scheduled for this morning.
