The National Roads Administration (ANE) has announced that it needs 11.5 million meticals (2.7 million dollars) to guarantee the maintenance of Maputo’s road network during the 2024-25 rainy season, according to Lusa.
According to Dade Mendes, ANE’s delegate in Maputo province, the amount could vary depending on the damage caused by the rains, since there are critical areas where there is frequent flooding and traffic difficulties.
To deal with the rainy season, ANE has already mobilised contractors and technical teams and is ready to intervene quickly in emergency situations. Dade Mendes emphasised that maintenance will be prioritised in the most vulnerable areas and that if the rains are less intense, the damage could be less.
The past rainy season seriously affected the country, affecting around 240,000 people and destroying more than 1,800 homes. Between 2019 and 2023, extreme phenomena such as cyclones and storms caused more than 1,000 deaths and left 2,936 people injured. These events, increasingly frequent due to climate change, place Mozambique among the most vulnerable countries in the world.
ANE reaffirmed its commitment to minimising the damage, ensuring that it is prepared to respond to the challenges posed by the rains, with the aim of guaranteeing accessibility and reducing the impact on urban mobility in the capital.
