The town of Vilankulo, in Inhambane, hosted the first pre-feasibility public consultation on Tuesday 1 October to define the environmental impact study project for the construction of the Mapinhane Road to neighbouring South Africa.
According to Rádio Moçambique, this is a 600-kilometre road that will link Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Called the ‘Mapinhane Development Corridor (CODEMAPA)’, the project will be implemented through a public-private partnership.
Initially planned to link the National Road Number 1 (N1) from Mapinhane, updated studies indicate that this could happen from Mavandza, to facilitate connectivity with the deep-water port to be built on the coast of Belane, in Inhambane.
The representative of the company RMS Consultores, Renato Mazivila, responsible for carrying out the environmental impact study for the construction of the new road, assured that it will begin in the first half of 2025.
For his part, the president of the Business Council in Inhambane, Abdul Razaque, said that the class is looking forward to the results that will determine the implementation of the project.
On the same occasion, the director of the Provincial Environmental Service, Tiago Merione, said he believed that, with the province’s experience in resettlement processes, the consultant would do a quality job.
