The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, inaugurated the new jetty on Ibo Island, an infrastructure designed to boost the economy and tourism in that region of Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambican.
The project, which represents one of the milestones of the Idai and Kenneth Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Programme (PREPOC), was financed by the World Bank and the Mozambican government.
The 60 metre-long infrastructure was rebuilt using a metal structure and clad in wood, including a concrete access bridge and a bridge plaza.
The works are budgeted at around 330 million meticals (just over 5.2 million dollars). The figure includes the Búzi jetty, in the central province of Sofala, a region severely affected by Cyclone Idai.
The new Ibo jetty favours mobility between communities, facilitating the transport of people and goods, as well as boosting tourism and trade in the area.
The work, which not only improves the connection between Ibo and other areas of Cabo Delgado, also gives hope of better days for the population.
The inauguration of the new quay bridge symbolises the arrival of moments considered to be glorious for Cabo Delgado, at a time when the province, in addition to the terrorism that has plagued the local population since 2017, has faced cyclones that have destroyed social and economic infrastructure, such as bridges.
